If I understand correctly, the issue is how a sentence like 2 +2 can be a proposition and a definition at the same time. I don't see the problem with tautological propositions, but maybe you have a different definition of a proposition, like as a possible matter of fact statement. This makes me thin...

Two kids drowning on your right and 5 kids with muscular dystrophy (or another life-shortening disease) drowning on your left. If you have to choose, which ones do you save...
