Re: New normative theory (also a PhD thesis)

Londoner: I am saying that people should be able to understand and make specific choices, or rather choices with regards to specific things. I never suggested one needs to understand the morality of a void. Hobbes: It isn't a mistake of the realist to think that moral statements actually refer to so...

Re: New normative theory (also a PhD thesis)

Bradbury: I think I would agree that if you remove all persons (not only humans) from the universe then there would be no morals, as I think morality is the way in which persons ought to be or act so it can't exist without persons, but you seem to mean something rather different from this. You seem ...

Re: New normative theory (also a PhD thesis)

No, I am not a theist or a dualist of any kind.

I would also not like oughts in an amoral universe, except for the rational kind I suppose, but I don't think we have an amoral universe.

New normative theory (also a PhD thesis)

I am a PhD student who is working on an entirely new normative theory and, as part of that, I am looking for people to point out any problems with my arguments or any objections I should deal with to my theory. Previously I have posted links to chapters but that is quite a lot to read in order to co...

Re: Justifying taxation and the state, also a PhD thesis

Yeah sorry the links broke. I posted new ones that should be working currently in a later post. I will amend OP now to reflect this.

Re: Justifying taxation and the state, also a PhD thesis

The extent to which states are obligated to look for problems to solve and how much they can be justified in taking from us in order to do so is interesting. Could be worth discussing... maybe in the objections chapter rather than this one, but could be interesting. PM me with how you'd like to be r...

Re: Justifying taxation and the state, also a PhD thesis

I don't think I ever use the phrase "freedom of conscience". Are you sure you found the right paper? Sorry the links weren't working. The one's I just posted appear to be working though.

Re: Justifying taxation and the state, also a PhD thesis

I agree unjust has a different meaning from legalized. The libertarian would agree that taxation is legalized theft, but would argue that it is generally not justified. I am arguing that it is justified. Do you mean for this chapter or the thesis as a whole? The applicable bibliography is in the cha...

Re: Deception, consent, and a PhD thesis

First: I know you didn't ask for my opinion. I gave it anyway. Second: You didn't ask any questions in that post, you only made statements. In fact, the truth of your first point seems to rather negate your second point. Even if I were a phony, which I'm not, why would it matter to the discussion of...

Re: Deception, consent, and a PhD thesis

I disagree that no one could provide useful feedback without having access to my bibliography, although most of the references relevant to that chapter in particular are included in the chapter posted. One could potentially see an error in my reasoning or think I have ignored a relevant argument or ...

Re: Justifying taxation and the state, also a PhD thesis

The taking of property owned by another by force is what I am referring to in one sense. But I suspect the best answer to your question is that I am referring to the libertarian concept of taxation as the unjust theft of a property from individuals by the state. I recommend reading Anarchy, State an...

Deception, consent, and a PhD thesis

I am a student in my last year of writing my PhD. For my thesis I am developing and defending a new normative theory called "freedom consequentialism". Part of this involves gathering objections from a range of sources and responding to them in my thesis. So, I am posting a chapter of my t...
