Re: How do you communicate context?
An emoticon is not a word. The reason words require a context is that the word itself has no systematic connection with what it refers to. So for example the sound "fish" or the typewritten word "fish" don't resemble a fish. But the smiling emoticon does resemble a smiling face. ...

A paradox is self-contradictory, those sentences are self-contradictory, so they are paradoxical.

Ok, thank you Scott. Well, as I am unwilling to waste my time disentangling your poorly-thought out sentences I doubt if we will be discussing much here.Scott Mayers wrote: What is 'coherent' to one is not to another dependent upon ones' background experiences.

Speak for yourself. You quoted me in limited context to a larger post that restricts meaning to how I was responding or choosing my words. Also, it appears the word "charge" above is a typo of mine as I cannot even interpret this without looking back. The link you provided is one such con...

Re: Do you need consciousness to have emotion?
Your distinction animal/human is a false one. The differences between what you like to call animals and humans is of degree and not kind. Humans are animals too. http://philosophy.lander.edu/oriental/charity.html The Principle of Charity is a methodological presumption made in seeking to understand...

Re: Can Robots Be Ethical?
How do you know? I wasn't intending to prove this with respect to your appeal one way or the other. But just to be certain, what is it that you think I'm claiming in your own words? I don't need to use my words Scott, here are the claims you made in your own words: How we 'feel' is the variant 'col...

Re: Do you need consciousness to have emotion?
what does human language have to do with "self-awareness"? one can be self-aware without ever having interacted with anyone, and without any language. Maybe, I don't think it's been demonstrated, but that's beside my point. Even if your hypothetical human had never interacted or used lang...

Re: Do you need consciousness to have emotion?
what about this: there are at least two types of consciousness. one is very low (simple, basic), as in just sensing (which applies to animals as well), and another higher (more complex) form, which is sufficient awareness, that only humans possess, and which enables more significant emotions/feelin...

Re: Can Robots Be Ethical?
I have proposed this with explanation in many places but it requires a formal degree to even get a foot in the door for most things. Politics are also involved too in many things. So I don't pander to popularity. You've missed the point of what I was saying Scott. If what you were saying about how ...

Re: Can Robots Be Ethical?
How we 'feel' is the variant 'colors' of the multitude of possible charge events in these ways. But the ones that are 'empathetic' in frequency and simultaneity between multiple neurons is what makes us conscious as a whole. Hi Scott, What makes us conscious as a whole is the largest outstanding qu...
