Re: Doctor Who and Philosophy

Been awhile, but that sounds a fair assessment. He's had to struggle with these issues in the news series.

Re: Intro, not for the weak of heart

Very much so. I'm particularly fond of the Daleks, who try so hard to conquer the universe, and fail so miserably every time. :) Even have a twelve inch remote control one that I used to play with my cat. ,,,^..^,,,~ Postscript: Wait. Does that mean you haven't seen the Tom Baker episodes yet? They ...

Re: Intro, not for the weak of heart

I got that feeling already from you, Doc. You have my respect, and my best wishes... Cheers.

Re: Intro, not for the weak of heart

Fair enough, and just to be clear the discussion, for my part, was not intended to change your mind, just to clarify the situation. I was wondering. It's part of the "breeder bingo" both antinatalists and Childfree often hear. And FYI, none of my own children were intentional, it's more l...

Re: Intro, not for the weak of heart

Putting it into more practical terms, a biology teacher I knew once said, "When you plant corn, you usually get corn.", and the same can be said for people, no matter what the idealists tell you. And I'm not talking about good and bad, More like the inherent level of potential intelligenc...

Re: Intro, not for the weak of heart

Thank you Blaggard and Spheres for the welcome. No worries, Blaggard. No imperialist tendencies here. Thank you also for the confirmation of the link issue. Spheres, I loved your critique. Thank you. I'm certain you do what you can for your kids. That's all any parent can do.  I do see one thing dif...

Re: Do you want to live forever?

I'm guilty of that to Doc. But I try to couch my pessimism in humour for others' benefit. I don't mean this as an ad hominem to her, but I think she is hurting. And I don't wish to worsen the hurt she feels. I will admit that I was just a little put off by Trixie's user ID, but further interaction ...

Re: is consciousness supernatural and not a part of evolution.

Very welcome. Peter Wessel Zapffe is still mostly in Norwegian, but there is a translation of his essay, "The Last Messiah", floating about. Not a long read, but intense. He is by no means your typical philosopher. Class him in the heavy pessimism branch.

Cheers.

Re: Is the problem really theism? Or is it theists?

What a smug ass, to assume I came to my conclusions in a vacuum. You flippantly dismiss Diogenes, Al Ma'arri, Schopenhauer, Zapffe, Camus and many others (more knowing dead people), whilst criticizing me for neglecting your favourites (which you did not specify til now). Let's not play "my dadd...

Re: Is the problem really theism? Or is it theists?

Reli, don't edit your post to change your mind on the existence of ghosts, when you've already claimed that children are troubled by them in the here and now, in their closets, no less.... Especially when you have hordes of knowing dead people who would back those claims! I am am defenseless against...

Re: Is the problem really theism? Or is it theists?

My mistake. Dystheism is a new term for me as well. The gist is that God is neither wholly good, and may be bad. Maltheism is the concept of the evil God, something akin to a demiurge. The Gnostics of early Christianity held this view, generally. If my definitions are off, please forgive me. It's fr...

Re: Intro, not for the weak of heart

We have no guarantees as to how anyone of our children will turn out, Doc. Good kids may come of bad parents, as the reverse may be true. But no one should be brought into this world for another's need or utility, and so I decline to do so. Try not to hold it against me. Yes, these ideas are mainly ...
